FAQ
What is the Network Automation Forum (NAF)?
The NAF aims to answer the question “why have we not seen full adoption of network automation yet?” It’s a forum for discussion among engineers, architects, developers and others to discuss what is next for networking. The in person event takes place in Amsterdam in May
Should Network Engineers learn Automation?
Network Engineers should consider network automation as a standard skill and should include it in their learning. It is as important as understanding OSPF and BGP and without automation skills they will not be able to manage the level of change required for large scale networks.

As of 2024, network automation remains a transformative concept with immense potential, yet its adoption as a standard practice in enterprise networks is still not ubiquitous. Despite the undeniable benefits it offers, several factors contribute to the slower-than-expected adoption of network automation in enterprise environments.
Complexity of Legacy Infrastructure: One of the primary challenges hindering the widespread adoption of network automation in enterprise networks is the complexity of existing legacy infrastructure. Many enterprises operate on networks that have evolved over years or even decades, consisting of diverse hardware, software, and protocols. Integrating automation into such heterogeneous environments requires careful planning, testing, and potentially significant investments in upgrading or replacing outdated systems.
Skills Gap and Training: Another significant barrier to adoption is the shortage of skilled personnel with expertise in network automation technologies. While automation tools and platforms continue to evolve, there is a lack of professionals proficient in leveraging these tools effectively. Enterprises often face challenges in recruiting, training, and retaining personnel with the necessary skill sets to implement and maintain automated network solutions.
Risk Aversion and Fear of Disruption: Enterprise networks are critical infrastructure supporting core business operations, and any disruption or downtime can have severe consequences. As a result, many organizations are cautious about implementing new technologies like network automation that could potentially disrupt existing workflows or introduce unforeseen risks. The fear of unintended consequences or operational failures often leads to a conservative approach, slowing down the adoption of automation.
Vendor Lock-In and Compatibility Issues: Vendor lock-in and compatibility concerns also contribute to the hesitation in adopting network automation. Enterprises may be reluctant to commit to automation solutions from a single vendor, fearing dependency and potential interoperability issues with other systems or future technologies. Achieving seamless integration and compatibility across diverse vendor environments remains a significant challenge, particularly in multi-vendor network environments.
Cost and Resource Constraints: Implementing network automation requires upfront investments in technology, training, and personnel. For many organizations, especially smaller enterprises or those operating on tight budgets, the perceived cost of automation initiatives may outweigh the anticipated benefits. Additionally, allocating resources and securing budget approvals for automation projects amidst competing priorities can be challenging, further delaying adoption.
Organizational Culture and Resistance to Change: Cultural factors within organizations also play a significant role in the adoption of network automation. Resistance to change, inertia, and a lack of understanding or appreciation for the benefits of automation can impede progress. Convincing stakeholders, including executives, IT teams, and end-users, of the value proposition of automation and overcoming resistance to new ways of working requires concerted efforts in communication, education, and change management.
Regulatory Compliance and Security Concerns: Enterprises operating in regulated industries such as finance, healthcare, or government face additional hurdles in adopting network automation due to stringent compliance requirements and security concerns. Ensuring compliance with industry regulations, protecting sensitive data, and mitigating cybersecurity risks are paramount considerations that can complicate the implementation of automation initiatives.
In conclusion, while the potential benefits of network automation are widely recognized, its adoption as a standard practice in enterprise networks continues to face challenges. Addressing these barriers will require a concerted effort from industry stakeholders, including technology vendors, training institutions, regulatory bodies, and enterprises themselves, to overcome obstacles and unlock the full potential of network automation in driving efficiency, agility, and innovation.
