JNCIA DevOps Certification

The JNCIA-DevOps (Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate – Automation and DevOps) is an associate-level certification in Juniper Networks’ Certification Program[1][2]. It validates the holder’s expertise in using scripting tools and languages to automate devices and networks that operate with the Juniper Network Junos operating system.

Key aspects of the JNCIA-DevOps certification include:

  1. It is designed for entry-level admin and networking professionals with at least one year’s experience and a basic understanding of Junos automation tools and best practices.
  2. The certification exam (JN0-221) is a 90-minute test consisting of 65 multiple-choice questions.
  3. It covers topics such as DevOps concepts, automation tools, and their application to Juniper devices and solutions.
  4. The certification is valid for three years and can be recertified by passing any JNCIA exam or a specialist-level exam.
  5. It serves as a prerequisite for the specialist-level JNCIS-DevOps certification.

The JNCIA-DevOps is valuable for professionals looking to validate their skills in Juniper Networks automation and DevOps practices, whether they work for end-user enterprises or service/integration firms.

JNCIA DevOps Exam

From 17th February 2025 there will be a new exam for JNCIA DevOps (JN0-224)

Juniper Networks

Juniper Networks is a leading provider of networking and cybersecurity solutions, specializing in high-performance routing, switching, and security products. Founded in 1996 by Pradeep Sindhu, the company has grown to be a key player in the global telecommunications and enterprise IT markets. Juniper’s products are designed to help businesses and service providers build efficient, secure, and scalable networks. The company’s technologies support cloud computing, data centers, and high-speed internet infrastructure, enabling organizations to manage and optimize their networks with precision and reliability. Juniper is known for its commitment to innovation, consistently introducing new advancements in network automation, artificial intelligence, and software-defined networking (SDN).

Junos automation

Over the years, Juniper Networks has built a strong reputation for offering comprehensive solutions that address the complex demands of modern digital environments. Its products include both hardware and software that allow companies to control traffic flow, secure data exchanges, and improve network efficiency through automation. The company also offers advanced services, such as security appliances, management software, and network visibility tools. With an emphasis on simplifying network operations, Juniper has pioneered several industry-first technologies like its Junos OS, which allows for centralized management across multiple devices. This focus on user-friendly solutions and technological advancements has made Juniper a preferred choice for enterprises and service providers seeking robust, scalable, and future-proof networking solutions.

There are a few places to learn the JNCIA DevOps curriculum. Juniper have a course, Udemy have a few, CBT Nuggets have one but I think it might be a bit out of date now?

What is NetConf?

NETCONF (Network Configuration Protocol) is a network management protocol that provides mechanisms for configuring and managing network devices in an efficient and standardized way. It is defined by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) in RFC 6241 and operates over a reliable transport protocol, such as SSH, to enable secure and consistent management of devices like routers, switches, firewalls, and other network equipment. NETCONF allows network administrators to automate configuration tasks, monitor network status, and manage resources with a clear set of operations, such as retrieving data, changing configurations, and committing or rolling back changes.

NETCONF is designed to be extensible, allowing it to support various device types and configurations. It uses XML as the encoding format for both the configuration data and the messages exchanged between the network management system (NMS) and the devices. By using devops principles and providing capabilities like transaction-based changes, rollback, and configuration validation, NETCONF ensures that network configurations can be modified with minimal risk of disruption. This makes it an essential tool for automating network management in complex, large-scale environments where consistency and error-free configuration are critical. Additionally, NETCONF often works alongside other technologies like YANG (Yet Another Next Generation) to define the data models used for configuration, making it more versatile and adaptable to evolving network needs.

JNCIA DevOps Study Guide

JNCI DevOps, how to pass the JNCIA certification

To effectively prepare for the Juniper JNCIA-DevOps certification exam, focus on understanding core automation concepts, leveraging official resources, and gaining hands-on experience. Here’s a structured approach:

  1. Master Exam Objectives
The exam covers Junos automation tools, NETCONF/XML API, Python/PyEZ, REST API, and DevOps practices. Prioritize topics like data serialization (JSON/YAML), Junos PyEZ libraries, and automation frameworks. Use the official Juniper exam blueprint to identify key areas.
  2. Utilise Free Juniper Resources
Junos Genius: Access free training modules and discounted exam vouchers.
Juniper vLabs: Practice configurations in a virtual lab environment to apply automation workflows.
Juniper TechLibrary: Study API documentation and automation guides.
  3. Hands-On Practice
Write Python scripts using PyEZ to automate Junos device tasks like software upgrades or configuration management.
Experiment with NETCONF and REST API integrations using tools like Postman or Ansible.
  4. Practice Exams
Take timed practice tests (e.g., NWExam’s 245+ scenario-based questions) to identify weak areas 18.
Review Juniper’s official practice exam on the Learning Portal, which mirrors the live test format .
  5. Study Supplementary Materials
Read Day One books for practical automation use cases.
Join forums like r/Juniper on Reddit for peer advice and troubleshooting tips.
  6. Time Management
The exam includes 65 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. Simulate exam conditions to improve speed and accuracy.
Avoid relying solely on exam dumps; instead, focus on building practical skills. With consistent study and lab practice, you’ll be well-prepared to achieve the 70% passing score 25.
