Bob McCouch CCIE #38296 has recently passed his CCIE in Routing and Switching and has done a great write up on some general questions about his approach to the lab and how his 2nd attempt was his passing attempt.
The most important bit of info for me was his acknowledgement that to make it you really need the support of your employer and family of which it appears Bob had both.

Also, something that I did have last time as well as this time, but that I think is just critically important, is unwavering support from my employer and my spouse. I’d had a lot of time off leading up to this attempt, and much of that time off from work I actually spent living in my mother’s basement, labbing 18 hours a day while my wife acted as a single parent for our two small children. Having and maintaining a good support structure is just so important — I literally can’t imagine how someone can tackle the CCIE without it.
