AWS Certification Path for Beginners
AWS Certification validates your expertise in AWS cloud technologies. It helps professionals highlight in-demand skills and validates your skills with a series of exams.
For most the AWS certification path is starting with Cloud Practitioner and progressing to Architect, with options for Developer, and Operations roles. There are also many speciality options. If you are just starting out the first exam you need to pass is the AWS Cloud Practitioner.
Starting in Feb 2023 I am embarking on the journey to become AWS certified. Keep checking back for updates on my progress.
As an essential in your AWS certification journey I would say you need to get the AWS Cloud Practitioner and then the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate.
There is also a debate about your AWS certification path should start with the practitioner as a lot of the associate exams cover the material in the certified practitioner exam. So personally I am starting with the sysops associate exam and will then pickup the certified practitioner exam down the line.
After that you can choose what path is best for your career.
At a high level the AWS certifications are organised into four sections
The foundation level is a single exam – the AWS Cloud Practitioner
AWS Cloud Practitioner
The AWS Cloud Practitioner assumes no previous knowledge of AWS and provides a very high level overview of AWS.
Taking this exam will give you a bit of information on a lot of elements of AWS. It is designed as an introduction to AWS and is not super technical.
Nothing you will learn in this exam is wasted as it opens up the world of AWS to you and provides a very high level overview of the AWS infrastructure.
AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam
The AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam is 65 multi-choice questions over 90 minutes and the cost is $100 USD.
AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate Certification
The AWS Solutions Architect Associate is THE exam that you need to pass!
It goes a bit deeper into some of the core AWS offerings like VPC, S3 and EC2.
The exam is also multi-choice and has 65 questions over 130 minutes – the cost of the exam is $150 USD.
