Ever since MCP became popular, I hear people saying “does MCP replace APIs?”
Or do they both solve completely different problems?

Firstly the facts: APIs connect software systems through predefined endpoints, while MCP enables AI models to discover and use tools dynamically. So, they are two different things, but can MCP replace APIs?

Will MCP replace APIs?

No, the Model Context Protocol (MCP) will not replace APIs. Instead, MCP sits on top of existing Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), acting as a standardized translation layer that allows AI models to safely understand and navigate them.

Is MCP just a fancy API?

Yes, at its core, the Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open, JSON-RPC-based API standard, but it functions quite differently from traditional REST APIs because it is designed for AI agents rather than human developers.

Why use MCP instead of an API?

You use MCP (Model Context Protocol) instead of a traditional API because MCP is built for AI models to use dynamically, whereas standard APIs are built for human developers to hardcode.

It is important to note that MCP does not replace APIs. Instead, MCP sits on top of your existing APIs as an AI-friendly translator. It packages information so Large Language Models (LLMs) can discover, understand, and navigate tools on their own.
