VXLAN Terminology

In this VXLAN tutorial, we will be going through all the acronyms and VXLAN terminology used when configuring and deploying a VXLAN network.

VXLAN – Virtual Extensible LAN

Next we need to differentiate between the terms underlay and overlay network.

Underlay – This is the transport network between your switches, running a number of protocols, typically an IGP to route the fabric, i.e ISIS, OSPF, EIGRP. Then PIM to establish multicast reachability and BGP to establish the BGP control plane.
